For some reason the file type ".docx" doesn't translate correctly between Mac and Windows. If you need to open the document on a Windows computer -- to print it our for example -- the best way to ensure that the file is truly portable and it will open anywhere would be to save it on the Mac in rich text format (File > Save as: "*.rtf").

Another format that is portable between Mac and Windows is the Open Document Format or ".odf" which belongs to the OpenOffice application. Either of these formats should open in MicroSoft Word 2007 or 2010. However, please note that you might lose some of your formatting when you translate a document to a different format.
