When the Write-N-Cite 4 tab suddenly disappears from Word or is not working, sometimes after your first use. It could be that your system’s antivirus software such as Windows Defender is treating it as a malicious program and therefore preventing it from working. Write-N-Cite will be listed as disabled in the Add-ins (File>Options>Add-Ins>Disabled Application Add-ins) area. The problem is known to occur with versions 4.4.1272 and 4.4.1376.

The work around is to add Write-N-Cite to the exclusions list and to do this;

Go to Settings, select Update and Security then Windows Defender

Click on Settings and scroll to Exclusions and select Add an Exclusion.

Click on the Exclude a folder + button.

From the Select a Folder window, navigate to Program Files (x86) and to the ProQuest folder.  Next select Exclude this file.  This will restore the ProQuest tab and Write-N-Cite should work as normal.

This guide could also be used to add exclusions or exceptions to other Anti-virus products such as Avast and Avira.
